Submission
Categories
The 2026 MISE Submission Categories are Documentary, Montage, Soundscape, Mise En Scene and One Shot. Below are descriptions of each.
Documentary
Submissions for this category can hail from any aspect of documentary filmmaking, whether that be Poetic, Expository, Observational, Participatory, Reflexive, or Performative. We also welcome experimental approaches to non-fiction storytelling that may less so adhere to the traditional tropes associated with documentaries.
Mise-En-Scene
This category considers what is literally said on the tin, the mise-en-scene! Mise-en-scene incorporates multiple aspects of filmmaking, including set design, lighting, space, composition, costume, makeup and blocking. You will be judged on the creativity and intentionality of how you can manipulate your controllable and uncontrollable scene elements to create a visually appealing and critically compelling work.
Soundscape
Our Soundscape category will take into consideration the use of sound in your project, ranging from mixing, sound design, and original score (if present). You will be judged on innovation and creativity, as well as technical prowess and execution!
Montage
This category celebrates films shaped primarily through editing and structure. Submissions will be judged on originality and creativity, shot selection, rhythm and pacing, structure, and the effective use of sound or music. We are looking for work where the sequencing of images drives emotion or ideas, with the edit playing a central role in how the film communicates it’s intent. Narrative, experimental and abstract approaches are all welcome, as long as the montage form is essential to the film.
One-Shot
Film submissions that were, or appear as though they were shot in a single continuous take will be considered for this category. We encourage submissions that embrace creative and innovative ways to progress the narrative without the aid of cutting between perspectives.
